Energy Conference Content Abstracts

Keynote
Calvin M. Dooley
President and Chief Executive Officer, American Chemistry Council
The American Chemistry Council (ACC) has been recognized as the leaders in helping create the most comprehensive shift in energy policy in the last 25 years.  Mr. Dooley began his work with the ACC in September 2008.  The ACC worked with Members of Congress in passing legislation that allows the drilling of natural gas in the Outer Continental Shelf; they have also been lauded for strong work with Congress in crafting a chemical plant security bill that is balanced.  ACC’s priority advocacy efforts focus on the issues of rail completion, chemical site security, chemical regulation and health, environment and tax.

Utility Panel
Hear directly from your energy provider what is driving their business plans and how their decisions will affect your operations today and going forward. A panel representing all utilities in Kentucky will present an overview of their plans to address the many regulatory requirements from the EPA as well as other issues that are in their pipeline.

R&D Updates:  “R&D Today, Preparing for Tomorrow and Getting it Done”
This panel brings together research and legal professionals.  University researchers will discuss collaboration with industry to research new materials and designs for sustainability including coal by-products, algae, developing glass plate solar cell prototyping processes to provide a flow of proven concepts to the manufacturing processes.  In preparing for tomorrow, bio-fuels research is growing as the demand for “drop-in” bio-fuels is high, since using them would not require extensive and expensive retooling of existing engines or changes to fuel delivery or storage methods.  Attorneys will discuss the legal tools and concepts that help protect your investment in implementing these new strategies.

Engineering Capacity in the Manufacturing Sector
Rapid changes in the availability, sources, and rate structures relative to energy supply for manufacturing activities require engineers to review manufacturing process design and operating efficiencies to be able to adapt and survive. Customer demands are increasing, requiring manufacturers to provide “green” information, so that they may understand their total environmental impact. Regulatory changes may move us in the direction of selecting “winning” and “losing” manufacturing processes based on limited energy availability.  Engineers must present the compelling case for manufacturing process metrics and the “societal” value of manufactured finished products.

The Energy Market – Economics of Tomorrow’s Energy | "Energy" Important to your bottom line
Join this track to learn why energy is important to your bottom line. As part of this session you will hear from the regulatory side and what regulations might impact your cost of energy. You will hear from Fellon-McCord on current market conditions are and where they think cost might be going from a large-user perspective and the impacts that rising costs have, not only on large producers, but on Tier1 and below suppliers.

Success Stories for Energy Conservation
The purpose of this session is to share examples of industry "best practices" that represent energy retrofits of varying technologies.  Various owners will present details of their energy conservation measures and explain how they have measured and sustained proven performance.

THURSDAY, JUNE 14 – WORKSESSIONS

Getting Started - Part 1 – KPPC
A systems approach to energy efficiency enables energy managers, facilities personnel and other energy team representatives to understand the process of energy management, as well as helping educate their companies on how an effective energy management program benefits their organization and the environment.  The ENERGY STAR® seven-step energy management process guides energy teams to implement a successful energy efficiency program that reduces operating costs through the use of energy-saving products and practices for improved energy performance.  Tools such as motor and process equipment inventories and shut-down checklists are designed to help energy teams develop and implement their own energy management program.

Getting Started - Part 2 – KPPC
Kentucky industries will present their success stories in implementing an energy management program and share the “how-tos” and lessons learned during the process.

Renewables - What is Real Today?
Speakers will present new information and raise the profile of industry development and communications goals that encourage the development of bio economy projects and creation of bioenergy jobs and companies in Kentucky.

Demand Management Strategies that Work
Demand cost is typically 40-50% of the utility cost for manufacturers.  It is the most expensive portion of today's utility bills.  In this session, we will explore ways to increase profitability, improve overall energy efficiency, and reduce the impact on the environment and the local community. We will explore the applicability of combined heat and power systems as well as demand reduction strategies.
